Discover Petra - Lesvos

The area of Petra has been inhabited since ancient times, as can be seen from the tombs revealed on the Keramidaria site. According to legend, Achilles anchored here in the immense bay on his way to the Trojan War.

Although smaller than Molyvos, just 4 km further north along the coastal road which connects them, Petra is similar in many ways with small streets of cobbled stone and hidden treasures.

Shopping is good with many small galleries and gift shops as well as a local Ouzo distillery and bars and restaurants. Ouzo is an anise-flavored drink that is widely consumed in Greece and Cyprus, and a symbol of Greek culture.

Holidays in Petra

A romantic old village on the northern coast of Lesbos, Petra is full of narrow cobblestone streets, pretty squares and terracotta buildings. It’s also home to an unusual attraction: a big rock that soars high above the rooftops, with a charming church at the top. This is a beachside village with more to offer you than just the holiday staples of sun, sea and sand.

Sightseeing and souvenirs

Petra is the kind of place where shopping and sightseeing perfectly merge. In the atmospheric streets around the rock and main square, you can browse little shops selling locally crafted wood, jewellery and art, and tour a small Ouzo distillery that’s been run by the same family for generations. You might also find yourself walking past Vareltzidaina’s House, the restored home of a 19th-century merchant. It’s worth going in for a look around if you’re interested in local history, or are looking for something a little different to do on your holiday. But by far the best of all the sights in Petra is the view from the top of the rock, so set aside some time to climb the steps to Panagia Glykofilousa, the church that overlooks the whole village and beyond.

Beautiful beach

Above all, Petra is a perfect choice for a laid-back beach holiday, where you can walk barefoot on soft, golden sand and snorkel with colourful fish in the clear blue water. You can hire sun loungers and parasols, and the beach has been awarded the Blue Flag for quality. If you’d like a change of scenery, you’ll find another great beach nearby in the resort of Avlaki, which is about 1.5 kilometres away. There are a couple of tavernas and a café there, but that’s nothing compared to what’s available beside Petra’s beach. Lined with tavernas, bars and cafés, the Petra seafront comes to life as the sun starts to set. It’s a sociable place to toast the end of a relaxing day or dance the night away.

Enjoy Petra

Trek the 114 steps curling up to the monolith. While you’re resting your legs, you’ll be rewarded with eye-popping panoramas over the Turkish mainland.

Things to do!

Set around a turquoise bay on Lesbos’ northern coast is the traditional fishing village of Petra.

The village’s Blue Flag-awarded beach backs into a historic village filled with cobblestone streets and terracotta buildings, interspersed with local taverns, markets and important landmarks like the Panagia Glykofilousa.

After dark, Petra develops a sociable nightlife scene focused around its traditional seafront taverns.

Petra is an ideal location to stay and explore all of the island, conveniently located to offer easy reach to all Lesvos has to offer.

Enjoy the views from the Panagia Glykofilousa

You can’t miss the Panagia Glykofilousa (Church of Our Lady of the Sweet Kiss) as it’s Petra’s most visible attraction. It also tops TripAdvisor’s list of things to do in Petra, with reviewers describing the amazing views from the top. This traditional church sits on a big rock in the village, so you can look down on the cobbled streets and red rooftops or out over the sea to the horizon. We recommend you go early in the morning before the heat rises, or during the evening to see the sunset. You’ll have to climb 114 steps to get there, but it’s relatively easy and absolutely worth it. You might want to avoid it on a particularly hot day, though, or if you’re not feeling very lively.

Enjoy the Blue Flag beach

Petra beach is beautiful; people come here just to relax on the soft, golden sands and play in the clear, shallow water. It’s peaceful too, so you’ll love it if you like to stretch out and unwind with a good book. The long sweep of sand boasts Blue Flag status and you’ll be surrounded by pretty scenery of hills and greenery, plus there’s the lively waterfront lined with tavernas, bars and cafés -the best place to spend the evening in Petra.

The beach is also known for its vibrant underwater scenery. Like the rest of Lesbos, the sea life at Petra is so colorful that snorkeling and scuba diving are both popular. But if that doesn’t appeal, there are plenty of glass-bottomed boat trips so you can see the fish and reefs without even dipping a toe in the water. But if you are up for something more adventurous, Petra is a great place to learn how to sea kayak or windsurf as well.

Step back in time at Vareltzidaina’s House

If you like to find out about the history of the places you go to on holiday, you’ll want to visit Vareltzidaina’s House. This restored merchant’s house is not far from the main square in the heart of Petra, and its traditional furnishings and simple decor will give you an idea of what life was like here 200 years ago.

The house itself is even older than that, with wooden balconies hanging over the street and beautiful ceiling carvings and wall friezes inside. It isn’t very big, so won’t keep you away from the beach for long, making it a great place to stop off on a stroll through the village’s little cobbled streets. You also won’t have to part with much of your spending money to get in, making this hidden gem a bit of a bargain and a great way to add a little culture to your holiday.

Visit the Ouzo distillery

You can buy their Ouzo in Petra’s supermarkets, but it somehow tastes better when you’ve seen where it’s made, so it’s worth finding out when they’re open. Some also say Ouzo tastes the best when you’re on holiday in the Grecian sunshine, so don’t feel you have to save it for a souvenir. And it’s best sipped alongside a plate of mezedes (nibbles), which tends to be included when you order Ouzo in the traditional cafés. There’s no better place for feeling at home in any Greek town or village, and it’s a great chance to try some of Lesbos’ other local produce. Cheese, olives and locally pressed olive oil are some of the island’s tastiest products, and also available to buy fresh from the shops in the village.

Ouzo, the classic alcoholic drink of Greece, has particularly strong links with Lesbos. There are several distilleries on the island, even a small one right on your doorstep in Petra. It’s been run by a local family since it opened in the 1800s, and they’ll welcome you in for a tour. Just follow the smell of aniseed along the shopping street that leads from the main square.

Hidden gems of Lesvos!

The Kalloni wetlands, a birders’ paradise

More than 252 species of birds find refuge in the Kalloni wetlands. Not surprisingly, it ranks among Europe’s ten most important habitats for avian diversity and rarity.

Thermal springs of Eftalou

Between the brushwood-covered rocks - geological sculptures emerging from the sea – can be found the thermal waters of Eftalou. The water from the spring emerges from underwater springs at a temperature of 43.6-46.5 degrees Celsius and is renowned for its therapeutic.

The sacrifice of the bull

A pagan holdover from ancient times, this island ritual is still enacted every July in the village of Agia Paraskevi. A healthy bull is decorated with wreaths of flowers and finery before being sacrificed and then cooked and eaten, amid parades on horseback, dancing and feasting for three days.

Molyvos, castle town by the Aegean Sea

Molyvos can rival the most beautiful medieval fortress towns in Europe, Its houses grip the sides of a steep rock while turning their gaze to the Mediterranean. The structure and layout of the town and its 13th-century Genoese castle remain unchanged over the course of centuries.

The Petrified Forest, a rare phenomenon

There are very few places in the world where you can see trees lying where they fell millions of years ago. Take the time to visit the ‘park’, which was declared a Protected Natural Monument in 1985, and the adjacent museum, where you’ll learn about the island’s intriguing geology. This attraction is worth a visit during your holidays on the island.

Village Train.

Two tourist trains are waiting for you at the most touristic destinations on the island, Molyvos Petra & Anaxos , to offer you relaxation and fun to your sightseeing tour. You have the opportunity to "travel" in the picturesque port of Molyvos, the castle of the village, the narrow streets of Petra with the church of Our Lady on the rock, the sandy beaches of Petra and Anaxos and more ! Bird Watching

Since the early 1990s, Lesvos has quite rightly established itself as one of the premier birding destinations within the Mediterranean basin. It combines the excitement of migration with several key species which can be otherwise difficult to see elsewhere in Europe.

Lesvos offers some of the best birding in the Mediterranean basin. For four weeks each spring birders from across Europe converge on this outpost of Europe which lies just 5 miles off Turkey and Asia Minor. The birds are a blend of Mediterranean breeding species, migrants moving through to breed in eastern Europe and Asia Minor species such as Krüper’s Nuthatch.
